I will give some idea how to get used to Tainan and fell more like your new home.
1- When you just arrived go to a hardware store to buy stuff for your new home there are many in Tainan. There is a shop close to the university in Shengli Road 153 opposite to the 7-11 and the 14 stories building.
2- There are so many local restaurants anywhere in Tainan here however the menu is usually in Chinese , if you don’t speak Chinese point to the meal that you want and say Zeiga (pronounced Chegga).
2- As for food more similar to home you have to go to the supermarkets (not many locals like to eat outsides not to cook at home) , there are quite a few just ask for directions.
3- There are few foreign restaurants such as Indonesian, Indian, Greek, some McDonalds , KFC’s and some Starbucks coffee shop.
5- Try to learn Chinese (including writing!) as quickly as possible even basic Chinese skills can help you.
6 – As for English speaking abilities of the locals most people learn English at school
However they do not like to speak it so do not force them. Besides if your accent is not similar to the accent in the American movies you will not be well understood.
7- Weather is very hot most of the time be prepared for more information check this website: http://www.cwb.gov.tw/eng/index.htm
8- For transport I recommend you to buy bicycle or motorbike here.
just be aware that they have different driving habits form your home so look first and be careful when you first drive here.
9 – As for the emotional side, you will miss home sometimes you will like to go in the first available plane back for good. do not get desperate it is a challenge in such unique country like Taiwan. Here I give some advices to ease the difficulties:
10- Find more students from your country and/or region.
11- Find some foreign students who study the same as you study one (or more) year ahead.
12- Do not take to many courses/duties in the 1st semester it is the time to get used to Taiwan.
13- Leave some moments in the week to deal with your difficulties here e.g. by (think/talk/meditation...
13- Try to use help with an English speaking Taiwanese friend/class mate buddy partner…Especially when it is difficult for a freshman e.g. buying a scooter.
14- Remember Taiwanese people are very friendly and welcome to foreigners (:
Good luck (:
